BIOGEOLAB

Biogeochemistry - Biogeography - Land-Use Change

Research Interests

  1. Land-use/land-cover & climatic change effects on biogeochemistry & biodiversity

  2. New species assemblages effects on ecosystem structure and function

  3. Nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems

  4. Mechanisms of soil organic matter stabilization

  5. Hydrologic controls on carbon & nutrient transport

  6. Restoration of ecosystem goods and services

  7. Human drivers of land-use/land-cover change

  8. Tropical forest ecosystem ecology

  9. Environmental impacts of biofuel crop production

Research in our group integrates field and lab experimental work across different scales, from landscape-level effects of changes in land use on species composition and carbon pools, to molecular changes in organic matter chemistry.  We use stable and radioisotopes, spectroscopic, and analytical techniques to quantify process rates, identify sources and sinks, and better understand underlying mechanisms controlling stabilization and losses of organic matter and elements within and across ecosystems.

Prospective Graduate Students and Post-Docs

If you are interested in joining my research group, please send me an e-mail describing your research interests, past research experience, and your CV.  You can find more information about Geography at UW-Madison at the graduate program websites.  Opportunities exist for collaborations with the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE), the Center for Climatic Research (CCR), the Land Tenure Center (LTC), the Wisconsin Ecology Group (MEG), and the Center for Limnology (CFL).
